Shawnigan Lake is located on southern Vancouver Island, 5km west of Mill Bay and 45km north of Victoria. To reach Shawnigan Lake, travel on Highway 1 and watch for the signs!

Representing some of the best private schools in Canada; Shawnigan Lake School, Sunrise Waldorf, Bahá’í and Evergreen School are located in this scenic area.

The Village is a well-known venue for arts and craft shows and has a small assortment of coffee shops. It also hosts a small but excellent museum. A fun place for train and history buffs to visit is the last spike on the Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway (E&N), which was driven at Cliffside on the east side of Shawnigan Lake. Also in the area is the abandoned Kinsol Trestle, one of the world’s largest, highest wooden trestle bridges.

The Shawnigan Lake area has many parks to enjoy

  • Memory Island Provincial Park, on the southern half of Shawnigan Lake, can be reached by paddling 1km. It’s a great spot to enjoy a picnic or watch the birds.
  • Koksilah Provincial Park offers good hiking, fishing, mountain biking, camping, whitewhater kayaking and swimming. Also, the Kinsol Trestle is just outside the eastern boundary of the park.
  • West Shawnigan Lake Provincial Park has a beach that is popular with young families.
  • Shawnigan Lake Municipal Beach is located on Renfrew Road beside the Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway on the east side of the lake.
  • Bamberton Provincial Park, directly east of Shawnigan Lake and just south of the Mill Bay ferry terminal, offers a sandy beach and a shaded picnic area that faces the Saanich Inlet and Mount Baker on the mainland.
